LAST DAYS ON THE ISLAND AND WHAT CAME AFTER THAT

Time was flying by; every new day I spent on a new beach, and the evenings I shared with Jose, the guesthouse night guard, over beer and chats. Some evenings I spent with guests of the house who were delighted by the opportunity to see the moon and the stars through my telescope. In return, they invited me to dinner, so in the time spent there I had the rare chance to try quite a few dishes from the Venezuelan cuisine. When Jose had the night off we would go to a local bar together and spend our time having fun with his friends till late. I had decided to stay a month on the island after which I was to return to Bulgaria, however, I still hadn’t bought a ticket.

During my last week there, I spoke with a dear Bulgarian friend of mine over Skype and she reminded me of two things. The first one was a big dream of mine, called ayahuasca which is a special herbal potion, made with plants growing only in the Amazon Jungle. The potion is to be consumed in the presence of a shaman and leads to profound spiritual experiences. The second was the fact that back home in Bulgaria there was nothing exciting happening so I had to proceed with my adventure.

Bringing up ayahuasca for a second time filled me with that happy feeling, that tickled my insides, the same I felt when I was contemplating my departure to Venezuela. So this is how my decision to go to Peru was made.

But where exactly in Peru was I supposed to go? It didn’t seem right to arrive in Lima, stand in a queue and when my turn came to ask, “Excuse me, where can I take ayahuasca?”

I started my research on Google, which supposedly knows everything. Five minutes into the research I found myself reading a blog of a Bulgarian lady, who had been to Peru and who was thoroughly describing the ayahuasca ceremonies and her experiences. An email address was listed on the blog so I decided to write. I described my intentions and requested some information on the location and actions I had to take in order to drink the potion. I sent the email and went to Siro for an opinion. After all, he was originally from Peru and definitely knew some well-hidden secrets.

Siro knew very little about the ceremonies but promised to ask around and call me. The remainder of the day I spent on the beach and upon arrival to my room I was nicely surprised by an email. The lady from the blog had emailed me back! In her message she explained that she was currently in Peru and that if I wished to join her, she would gladly provide me with all necessary information on how to reach her, and what’s more, she would even meet me at the airport. To me that was hitting the jackpot. That was a sign from Life, that everything was good and I was moving according to plan and there was nothing to be afraid of.
