THE DEPARTURE

September rolled in and my departure was to take place in two weeks. I’d lie if I said I wasn’t scared. I was scared but at the same time, I felt great joy within. That joy wasn’t coming from a thought though. I’m not sure where exactly it came from but it gave me peace. I told myself, “If my spirit celebrates, why fall into the traps of my fearful mind?”

I had three connections to make – one in Spain, then Italy, and finally in Caracas, where I took a domestic flight to Margarita Island.

The luggage – a mountain! Don’t forget I was trying to emigrate, therefore I packed plenty of clothes and many possessions, as well as my favorite gadget – my telescope. My plan was to make a living with it till I settle and find a proper job. “I’d go to the city square in the evening”, I thought, “and I’d show people the Moon, Saturn or Jupiter, Mars or Venus, and if they wanted they could drop some small change in the box, just enough to buy food.”

The telescope in question was the reason for a number of comical and interesting situations. That same telescope was the start of my Venezuela Adventure, an Adventure whose guide was Life itself.
